WHAT DO YOU SERVE AT A DOCUMENTARY DESSERT?
...............................................................................................................
With your friends, brainstorm several ways to make
your “documentary dessert” a significant learning experience. Ideas:
FOOD. Ask each person to bring food that they purchased
or prepared for less than $2. Reminder: Nearly 3 billion people
(half of the world’s population) live on less than $2 a day.
----------------------
2 LOAVES AND 5 PIES. Build your dessert/snacks
around the amazing story from Matthew 14:19-21.
Imagine if there had been 5,000 homeless men
(plus women and children) at this gathering and Jesus
had performed this miracle!
----------------------
COUNTRY. Feature one country and ask everyone
to research the foods of that country and bring
something representative of the standard diet.
MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO
If you plan to make your own documentary, here are some ideas:
INTERVIEW. Interview a rescue mission employee
about the realities of the poor in your city or state.
ROLE PLAY. Act out a brief drama of what daily
life might be like for a person who lives on less than $2 a day.
QUIZ SHOW. Re-create a favorite quiz show
from the 1950s or 1960s and ask “contestants” questions
relating to the big issues of poverty as described
in The Hole in Our Gospel.
SUNDAY MORNING NEWS SHOWS. Using a Sunday
morning network news show format, video a “poverty panel.”
The moderator should ask the politicians,
pastors and other “experts” on the show what
should be done about the big issues described in
The Hole in Our Gospel.
PARTING GIFTS
Send each guest home with a symbol of poverty.
Use your creativity. The symbol might be an empty water bottle,
a Scripture verse written on a stone, or something
else (perhaps an image or photo from the video). Challenge
your guests to keep that symbol “front and center”
in their lives for the next seven to 30 days.
